Some Are Sorry, Some Are Not

Sorry Everybody presents itself as an opportunity to “apologize to the rest of the world” that President Bush was reelected. The site is full of photos of sad looking people holding hand-printed messages of apology. In response there’s We’re Not Sorry filled with photos of happy people holding other sorts of messages.

Matching this level of discourse, I’ll quote Dr Seuss’s One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish:

Some are sad. And some are glad. And some are very very bad. Why are they sad and glad and bad? I do not know. Go ask your Dad.

If my older son asked me this question, I’d tell him that some people are happy and some are sad because people are different. We don’t always see things the same way. I may apologize for my son’s behavior but to me, apologizing for the votes of other Americans is condescending. I didn’t vote for President Bush but I’m not going to apologize for the 52% of voters who didn’t see it my way. Democracy means that we get to participate in the process. It doesn’t mean that we always get what we want.

Note: I realize that some people feel a lot stronger about the election results than I do. And everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But, putting the shoe on the other foot, if someone started apologizing for my voting record it would piss me off. Now I’m going to find some interesting non-political miscellany to post about

Update: Sorry Everybody now has an international response: Apologies Accepted. Geez.
