Ah memories. Here’s a screenshot of NeXT Mail circa 1990. When you opened Mail.app for the first time this was the first message in your Inbox. The audio playing was part of the message. Normally it would play if you double-clicked on the mouth icon inside the message. The NeXT mail format predated MIME. They used an extended form of RTF for text. Mail.app would uuencode rich text and attachments into an RFC822 message body. I remember this audio quite well especially the way that Jobs stretches out the word “and”.
An even more memorable sound clip from NeXTstep featured a British-accented female voice announcing that “Your printer is out of paper”. Once when I was working late at night alone in the office that audio alert scared the crap out of me.
