Phishing Phor Phishers

DreamHost CEO Josh Jones’ wife fell for a phishing scam. She sent her social security number and a credit card number to a website that she thought belonged to the IRS, expecting to received a tax refund. She was pretty embarrassed about it and made him promise not to tell anyone. So, of course, Josh blogged about it. I wonder how she feels now? Josh’s comment: “But, believe it or not, my wife is not stupid. In fact, she has a PhD from Harvard!” is unlikely to make her feel much better.

His intent is fine. Phishers are evil. If this cautionary tale helps more people avoid falling for their scams, that’s great. But as Josh tells the story, it doesn’t sound like he told his wife that he was going to make her story public. Maybe he just said that she “made him promise not to tell anyone” for dramatic effect. If not, someone besides those phishers may be in trouble now.
